Trapper Joe Cabey, nicknamed Monkey Joe, sets his traps of chicken-wire cages baited with sugar cane to catch vervet monkeys June 21, 2002 near the capital city of Basseterre, St. Kitts. Monkey Joe has been trapping monkeys for nearly twenty years, selling them to the island's research facilities while also running his nearby farm. The island is home to thousands of African green, or vervet, monkeys. Former pets of the British during colonization, the monkey population is now nearly double the island's human population of 40 descending like a plague on crops and devouring mangoes, cashews, and sweet potatoes, which angers local farmers. Yale University's St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation pays trappers $50-$150 per monkey for use in scientific research into stem cells, Parkinson's disease, alcoholism, epilepsy, gene therapy and neuro-degenerational disorders. A green monkey can sell for up to $500 USD to overseas laboratories. Obtenez des photos d'actualité haute résolution de qualité sur getty
