The original medieval fort was rebuilt in northern Italian renaissance style in 16th Century, and this chateau became the core of a large complex. More wings were built in late 16th Century, and extensive baroque arcades were installed. Further modifications in baroque style targeted the interiors, which are beautifully decorated and full with art. The last owners, ex-Italian nobles, brought two centuries of great wealth to the chateau, which became the capital of a very rich county. Sadly after it was confiscated in 1945, dark times fell upon the chateau, which became a prison camp for women, and later served the border guard. Great devastation followed, and was only stopped after 1979. Restoration efforts began in the 1990´s, first in the interior, and in 2020 a complete exterior restoration began, which should return this ugly duck into the original baroque beauty. First results are already visible on the repaired arcades, when completed this complex will become a unique baroque pearl again.
