Concorde, London Heathrow Airport, 1968. 'A Concorde supersonic airliner leaves the terminal area to taxi out to the runway for take-off. This photographic impression of the airliner is expected to become a reality in 1972 when the aircraft are due in service. Then Concorde could give the fastest passenger service in history, cutting flight times over world routes by more than half, flying at 1450 mph. ' Concorde made its maiden flight in 1969, and actually entered commercial service in 1976. All Concordes were grounded after one of the aircraft crashed near Paris shortly after take-off on 25 July 2000. Flights resumed in January 2001, but in 2003 British Airways announced that it would be retiring Concorde from service in October that year. Get premium, high resolution news photos at getty
