If a single malt is a virtuoso musician then a blended whiskey is the full orchestra. A top quality blended whiskey has more range depth complexity and balance than a malt. Carefully selected single malt whiskeys predominantly from speyside (the cradle of single malt whiskey distillation) are expertly blended with top-quality grain whiskeys to make cutty sark. It is matured predominantly in american oak casks which impart less color to the spirit but impart further subtle and complex flours. Once matured the malts are blended together as are the grain whiskeys. This process is a particular feature of cutty sark and ensures the final blend is harmonized and therefore consistent in color and flavor. 40% abv tasting notes: color: pale gold nose: grassy fresh and fragrant. Palate: vanilla and oak character from american oak casks. Finish: fruity clean and dry. Rating: ultimate beverage challenge 89 points (mar 2015).
